Martin Smith Drama
Martin Smith is a BAFTA winning filmmaker who loves working with star cast as much as faces from off the beaten track, and relishes making drama steeped in moral complexity with a cinematic flair, that produces results that are rich, authentic and strike a powerful chord with audiences.
He was lead director on GRANITE HARBOUR for LA Productions and BBC1, and recently directed GRANTCHESTER for Kudos, Masterpiece PBS and ITV. He’s currently directing SILENT WITNESS for BBC Studios and BBC1. Next up he returns to the North East of Scotland to direct the 3rd season of GRANITE HARBOUR.
He directed 2nd unit on Jack Thorne's drama BEST INTERESTS with AC Chapter One and Fifth Season for BBC1. The project stars Sharon Horgan, Michael Sheen, Alison Oliver and Niamh Moriarty. He’s also directed 2nd unit on THE BOMBING OF PAN AM 103 with World Productions for the BBC and Netflix, and Jimmy McGovern’s upcoming UNFORGIVABLE with LA Productions for the BBC which stars Bobby Schofield, Anna Friel and Anna Maxwell Martin.
He is developing original features SHOWS with Creative Scotland and DigiCult, and TARANTULA with First Features and 104 Films, plus a number of original drama series.
Martin was selected for BBC Writersroom Scottish Voices 2022. This has lead to the development of new original series ideas with the guidance and editorial support of the BBC Writersroom team.
2021 saw Martin direct two episodes of HOLBY CITY for BBC1 and BBC Studios. The show was Nominated Best Continuing Drama at the BAFTA TV Awards and was Nominated Best Continuing Drama at the 2022 Broadcast Awards.
Prior to this Martin directed six episodes of Crime Drama ARMCHAIR DETECTIVES. The show was produced by Tiger Aspect for BBC1 and Won the 2018 BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Entertainment. He has also directed a clutch of BAFTA winning shorts - SEAGULLS, TRACKS, NAMES, LIAR and ACCIDENTS.
